Clutter. How does it happen? Where did it come from? Most importantly, how do you get rid of it? One day, you’re perfectly fine, and the next thing you know, it feels like you’re being overtaken by all this stuff. Here are some easy ways to declutter your space and get rid of the junk that may be overtaking your home and your life.
The fact is, we’ve all been there. When the way too much stuff overwhelms us and just can’t deal.
Easy Ways to Declutter
Get rid of a few things every day
I was reading an article that said if you got rid of 10 items every day, in a year, you’d get rid of 3650 items. I mean, it makes sense, right? And that sounds totally doable! I think I could get rid of 10 items a day. You could sell them, throw them away, donate them to charity, or anything you want! Imagine how much you could declutter by getting rid of 3600+ items in your home.
Throw away the stuff that’s obviously trash.
I know, that seems like a no-brainer, but sometimes it needs to be said. This is one of the easiest ways to declutter your home. Recycle the old newspapers. Set the magazines aside. Go through the mail that’s been collecting and toss out what’s not needed. For most people, this will cut down on the clutter immediately.
Put stuff back where it goes.
If you have kids, get them to pick up their toys and put them in their rooms or playroom. In my house, it ends up being shoes and coats all over the place. And then I wonder why I can’t find my shoes! Or my coat.
Fold the Laundry.
Yep. Fold it up and put it away. As a bonus, you’ll have a whole ton of clothes you had forgotten about and your wardrobe will be expanded!
Find a place for everything.
Sometimes, this means that you have to find creative solutions. One example is sticking the vacuum cleaner in the corner behind a screen or on the side of a tall piece of furniture. Occasionally, this also means that you discover that you’re the proud owner of a lifetime supply of paper towels. Because you forgot you already bought them.
When all else fails, and you’re totally overwhelmed, get everything out of your sight. I do this by getting a storage unit. This allows you to start decluttering with a clean slate. You can slowly bring items back into your home or get rid of them. Even if it’s just a month or two, it gives you space to organize.
Remember that your space didn’t get cluttered overnight. You won’t be able to declutter it overnight, either. But this should give you a good starting point and a plan of action that’s totally do-able.
