I am a beauty product junkie. It almost doesn’t matter where I am, if there’s a display of some type of beauty products, I’m checking it out. Unfortunately, there are some really bad, and bad for you, ingredients in many beauty lines. I’m talking about items that have been banned from our food supplies, but somehow are still acceptable to slather all over ourselves.
We have to remember that our skin is our largest organ. Anything our skin comes in contact with gets absorbed by our bodies. So many people are concerned with what we eat, but we’re not so cautious when it comes to what products we use.
How to Choose Natural Beauty Products
Look for Organic ingredients. In order for an ingredient to be considered organic, it’s had to undergo rigorous testing and monitoring.
Look for natural ingredients. Most brands that have natural ingredients are proud. A lot of times, they even say how organic their items are. This J.R. Watkins hand lotion says it’s 98.90% natural.
Try to avoid Parabens and Pthalates. Parabens are preservatives that mimic estrogen. Therefore, they disrupt your body’s endocrine system. Pthalates are ingredients that have “anti-testosterone behaviors.” Both ingredients are believed to increase your risks of cancer. NO thank you!
Look for this seal of approval. This is the seal for the Natural Products Association. It’s called the Natural Seal.
Now, I’m going to be the first one to admit it – I fall squarely into the camp of not always checking, or caring, what’s in my products. It’s not that I don’t care, because I do. It’s that I just don’t think to check and see what’s in whatever I’m buying. I’m more caught up in the moment, the adrenaline coursing through my veins, thinking about my fabulous find. Luckily, for people like me, there are brands that are making the right choices about their ingredients.
Even better, there is now an organization that makes it easy for us lazy folk to find these kind of good for you items. The Natural Products Association has created the Natural Seal. What’s the Natural Seal? It’s the first and only natural product certification in the US. How could it be that there’s nothing else like this in the US? Don’t we consider ourselves the leaders and on the cutting edge?
What kind of brands are sporting the Natural Seal?
This isn’t just some small no-name organization. Large, well known brands like Burt’s Bees, Aubrey Organics, and J.R. Watkins. There’s boutique brands like Sow Good, Pour le Monde, and Cara B Natural. There are even items for your home like cleaners and air fresheners.
Next time you’re out shopping for natural products, you know what to look for! Be sure to check out the lists of certified brands on the Natural Products Association website.
