Like I said above, this hot chocolate mix really is so easy to make. It only requires 4 ingredients! If you are going to give the homemade cocoa mix out as gifts, mason jars with lids are a super cute and exceptionally easy way to pack the mix up. If you are just making a batch up for yourself at home, then you really only need a food processor.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup crushed candy canes
- 3 tbsp dry milk powder
If you will be packaging up the mix as a gift, then you would also need to grab some mini marshmallows and have extra chocolate chips and crushed candy canes on hand.
Directions:
- Combine the cocoa powder, chocolate chips, crushed candy canes, and dry milk powder in a food processor. Blend until it becomes a powder.
- Once powdered, brew a cup of warm water or warm milk and mix in two tablespoons of the Peppermint Hot Chocolate Mix. Top your glass with mini marshmallows, whipped cream and sprinkle with additional crushed candy canes and mini chocolate chips. Enjoy!
To turn the hot chocolate mix into gifts: add about 3/4 cup of the Mix to the bottom of the mason jar. Top with 1/4 cup of mini chocolate chips. Next, add a layer of about a 1/4 cup crushed candy canes; then fill to the top with mini marshmallows. Add a decorative ribbon and give the gift of delicious Homemade Peppermint Hot Chocolate!
What if I don’t have a Food Processor?
The food processor is really for grinding up the chocolate chips and candy canes into a powder. If you have a blender, that should work just as well.
Storage, Serving, and Toppings:
Storage: the mix should be kept in a sealed, airtight container in a cool dry place. I would toss anything left after about 2-3 months, just the perfect amount of time to get you through the whole winter!
Serving: I always suggest placing the hot chocolate mix in your mug, then add the warm water or milk and stir. Adding the powder first and pouring the milk over helps prevents lumps of chocolate mix.
Toppings: Who doesn’t love marshmallows on top of the hot chocolate?? In addition to the marshmallows, you could add some whipped cream, extra chocolate chips, and even some additional crushed candy canes. Maybe even a drizzle of caramel or chocolate sauce! The possibilities are endless.
I would love to know if you give this homemade hot chocolate mix a try! If you do, please leave a rating and comment letting me know how you liked it!
