We all want to live a healthy lifestyle, don’t we? Check out these easy tips to get a jump start!
The new year is right around the corner. It seems that one of the resolutions that people always make is live a healthy lifestyle. Whether it’s eating better, getting more exercise, or not really having a plan, this seems to be our joint goal. Hey, I’ve made this pledge to live a healthy lifestyle myself. Many times.
Getting into the habit of eating healthily and exercising regularly, are both important parts of living a healthy lifestyle. It may be hard at first, but once you get into a routine of making healthier choices, it will become much easier.
Easy Ways to Live a Healthy Lifestyle
Eat healthier
Changing your eating habits can be a big change, and can take some time to get used to. However, once you follow a stable eating routine you will find it much easier to stay in control of your eating habits.
The people who skip breakfast tend to be the people who are overweight. Ensure that you eat a healthy breakfast each morning. Porridge and homemade granola are both great for keeping you full up until lunchtime. If you really don’t have time to sit down and eat, have a homemade fruit smoothie each morning. This is a quick and easy way to get a healthy breakfast down. To keep you fuller for longer, you can add a handful of porridge oats or protein powder to your smoothie.
Having a healthy lunch is important for keeping you going whilst you work. Swap to whole grain bread for your sandwiches, or better yet take an even healthier lunch to work with you. Leafy salads, jacket potatoes and homemade soups are excellent working lunch choices, especially as they don’t require too much effort to make.
Instead of eating fatty fast food and pre-made meals, swap to fresh, low fat alternatives. If you are too tired to cook dinner when you come home from work, prepare your evening meal in the morning before you leave for work, and slow cook it throughout the day. Swap white pasta, white rice and white bread for their whole grain or brown alternatives. Reduce your potato consumption by switching to sweet potatoes. Ensure that you have a large portion of fresh vegetables or salad with each meal.
If you can, avoid snacking altogether. But if you struggle, try swapping your old snacks for fruits and vegetables. Carrot sticks and cucumbers chunks are delicious with a small pot of low fat hummus. Fresh fruit salads and low fat yogurts are another excellent snacking choice.
If you are a dessert lover, you may find it hard to give up all of your favourite sweet treats, so instead of giving them up altogether, choose the healthier alternatives. For example, instead of regular chocolate and full fat ice cream, you could swap to sugar free chocolate and reduced fat ice cream or healthy frozen yogurt.
Exercise regularly
You may think that you simply don’t have the time to exercise but even doing 10 minutes a day can make a big difference to your health and lifestyle. If you don’t have time to go for a run or head to the gym, walk or cycle to work instead of driving, take the children for a walk to the park – just do something. Studies have shown that by exercising regularly you are more likely to live a healthy lifestyle.
If you struggle to stay motivated, join an exercise class or dance class with a friend. If you pay for your classes in advance then you may find that you are more driven to continue attending. By joining with a friend you can motivate and encourage each other.
Keep calm
Part of being healthy is having a calm and happy mind. If you have a stressful job or a stressful home life it is important that you take some time to unwind and de-stress. Go for a walk in the park or even for a short run to clear your head. Yoga and Pilates are great for calming your mind, so if you have time commit to attending one Yoga or Pilates class a week.
With a few easy steps, you’ll be on your way to living a healthier life.
